5 Signs Your Windscreen Wipers are Due for Replacement

5 Signs Your Windscreen Wipers are Due for Replacement - Carcility
Car repair

A windshield is meant to provide a clear view of the road and also protect the passengers from heavy wind blowing against the vehicle. Windshield wipers are provided in all cars to remove the dirt and dust particles. It also helps wipe off the rain water falling on the windshield to provide a clear view of the road. Alas, windscreen wipers are also like other devices and its blades may have to be replaced when it is worn out.

Here are five warning signs that indicate it’s time to replace them:

  1. Streaks on the Windshield: The wiper blade is made of rubber and it might harden over time. It makes it difficult to even move along the glass surface. It creates a streak on the windshield as it moves to either side. It is a clear sign that wiper blades have to be replaced. Streaks and smears can impair visibility, especially during rain or snow, increasing the risk of accidents.
  2. Bouncing or Roughness: If the windshield wiper fails to smoothly glide and appears to bounce, it indicates uneven wear as the blades have lost their flexibility becoming dry or hard. Overtime, the rubber blade loses its quality due to friction and exposure to the elements.
  3. Squeaking Sounds: Every time the windshield wiper is turned on, it should smoothly glide over the glass surface. If there is a squeaking sound or feels like a metal move over glass, the blades have turned spongy. It indicates replacement.
  4. Insufficient Cleaning: If there is dirt, or debris after using the wipers, it’s time to buy new blades. Skipping or chattering of the windscreen wiper causes insufficient cleaning of dirt. It compromises visibility and potentially causes distractions for the driver.
  5. Slow or irregular movement: If the wiper blade movement is slow or irregular, then the blades have to be replaced. Sometimes, you may notice ragged edges which also is a sign of wear and tear. Look for visible damage such as cracks, tears or missing pieces in the blade. Such damage will not allow blades to have proper contact with the windshield.

Inspecting the windshield wipers regularly, cleaning them during car wash and keeping sufficient windshield liquid for cleaning in the reservoir helps prolong the life of the blades. Remember a clean and dirt-free windshield enhances road visibility, and driving comfort and prevents accidents.
