6 Car Repairs You Should Never Do Yourself

A car is a sophisticated machine that has several operating parts which are controlled digitally in new generation models. There are some things that can be checked by the owner to ensure everything is proper before undertaking a journey. Owners should know the basics of car repair and maintenance such as checking oil levels and changing tyres in the event of a puncture. However, it is risky to undertake repairs using do-it-yourself manuals or based on self-confidence as it can cause harm to the vehicle and oneself.

Here is a list of 6 repairs an owner shouldn’t do himself, unless you are a trained personal.

Installing Audio System

Installing an audio system in a car is not as easy as plugging a device into your computer’s USB port or setting up a home theater system. Electrical wiring is involved and if wires are wrongly connected, it can lead to short-circuiting the system. This may cause faults leading to expensive repairs. It would be safe to take the car to a car electrician to fix the DVD or audio system in the car. And it isn’t expensive either.

Adjusting the Timing Belt

Timing belt is an essential component of your vehicle that synchronizes the movement of crankshafts and camshafts. Timing belts regulate the intake of oil, the opening of exhaust valves, and closing it to sync with the pistons. However, it is not advisable to change the timing belt as half of the engine may have to be dismounted. Reassembling it is not an easy job and hence the slightest mistake can harm the engine.

Suspension

Struts, weights, and shock absorbers provide a cushion for the car as it navigates through potholes and bumps. A normal suspension system includes MacPherson Strut, Solid Axle Setup, and Double-Wishbone. It takes care of the vibrations and ensures a smooth ride every time. Suspension setup is attached to each wheel, but it is not advisable to change the suspension which includes coil spring and damper/shock absorber as improper refitment can lead to accidents. It involves raising the car using a jack and you may end up injuring your hand or leg in the process.

Windshield Replacement

The windshield protects us from wind, rain, and dust and ensures the visibility of the road in front of us. Repairing or replacing the windshield is a skillful job that requires training and support. Apart from the glass, there are materials such as clips, window trims, and adhesives that must be used properly. If the glass is not fixed properly, it may break or during rains, water can seep in. Water seepage is not good for the vehicle as it can damage electrical circuits and dampen the interiors making it uncomfortable to travel.

Body Painting

When a layer of paint peels off or if there is a scratch, owners are tempted to use kits sold in the market to bring back the shine to the exterior. However, it may not help in restoring the paint to its original. Secondly applying paint is costly, takes time and needs patience. It is possible that it can be messed up and spoil the exterior. Mechanics with the right spraying guns and paint, can do the job in a professional manner.

A/C System Repairing

These days it is difficult to imagine a car without an air conditioner. However, it works on a sophisticated mechanical and electrical system. They also contain freon gas used for cooling and compressors that derive power from the engine to cool the machine. Although do-it-yourself videos and booklets can give you the confidence to recharge gas or do any repair associated with the system, it is not advisable as leakage of gas and damage to compressors can happen if repair is done without adequate skill.
