Car AC has to function properly for a comfortable ride during the summer. With temperatures soaring above 50 degrees Celsius this summer, it is all the more important to optimize the use of AC.

Here are some dos and don’ts to ensure the proper functioning of your car’s AC:

Temperature Setting: Setting the temperature excessively low can strain the system and lead to an increase in fuel consumption. The optimal temperature setting would be 22–24 degrees Celsius.

Open the Windows: When the car gets hot from parking in the sun, start the engine only after keeping the windows open for a while. This will allow hot air to escape, making it easier for the AC to start cooling as you begin your journey.

Recirculating Air: Avoid using fresh air from outside during the summer, as it may take a longer time to cool. Use recirculating air for optimum performance of the AC.

Cabin Sanitization: Keep the interiors free from dust, moisture, food particles, and debris to avoid clogging the air filters and prevent respiratory troubles for passengers.

Parking: Try to park the vehicle in the shade, as it will reduce the workload of the AC and assure a comfortable ride.

Refrigerant Level: If the AC’s cooling is not sufficient, it may be due to low refrigerant levels. Running the AC on low refrigerant gas may cause damage to the compressor.

Regular Maintenance: Don’t overlook regular AC maintenance. Check the refrigerant levels, condenser and compressor performance, air filters, leakage in AC pipes, AC drive belt, and other components. Regular maintenance can prevent expensive repairs.

Cleaning of Air Vents: Cleaning of air vents helps avoid blockages in airflow, reducing cooling efficiency. Regularly inspect and replace the cabin air filter to improve the AC’s efficiency.

If your car’s AC is making unusual noises or emitting foul odors, have it inspected by a professional. These issues might indicate a problem that needs attention.

If you suspect malfunctioning of the AC, unusual sounds, vibrations, or other issues, it is better to take the vehicle to a car repair center rather than trying to do something yourself.
